‘Kind of Blue’ marked the Cuban artist’s return to David Gill Gallery with an exhibition of paintings.

It is the second body of work created by the artist for David Gill, and is united in its exploration of the origin of colour; focussing on a ‘kind of blue’.

“The origin, the essence of things and phenomenon have always aroused my curiosity.” – José Yaque

‘Kind of Blue’ was the culmination of the artist spending several years on a journey to understand colour. Yaque writes: “the stories and information found are simply invaluable and the works that I have produced so far are the result of this search.”

The resulting exhibition summarised the artist’s interpretation of the essence of colour. Consequentially, he has come to feel it is the beginning of the search for this essence in ourselves as well.

“His special way of painting and his interrelation with materials… cause the apparent abstraction they denote to take on a telluric and almost dramatic force.” – Laura Salas Redondo, Freelance Curator

Titles sampling the chromatic terms: ‘Phtalo’, ‘Prusia’ and ‘Ultramarino’ referenced the almost precise approach Yaque takes in his study of colour, pigment, shade, depth and movement. His precision is then dramatized and amplified through paint and enamel onto the large canvases.

David Gill first met Yaque at his Havana studio in 2015. He invited him to complete a residency in London in October 2016. This was followed by Yaque’s first solo exhibition in London: ‘Tierra Madre’ at David Gill Gallery in March 2017. Also in 2017, the artist was included in the Cuban Pavillion at the 57th Venice Biennale.

The exhibition also served to continue the collaborative friendship between David Gill Gallery and Galleria Continua. Lorenzo Fiaschi, one of Continua’s founders, first introduced Gill and Yaque and has continued to support the relationship between the artist and the gallery.
