ABOUT ANTIQUITIES SERIES

The Antiquity series showcases classical forms in cast marble and marble composite which have been recontextualised as functional sculpture and appropriated into contemporary furniture.

“I used technology to "steal" classical sculptures I have revered since childhood. Claim their shapes as raw material to build my own new works. It's an act of gluttony and lust, to rape sacred works of art in a personal feast of gleeful, extasic excess. To appropriate that which belongs to the sacred world of the arts and use it freely in an exploration of its boundaries with the realm of the functional and the mundane.”

“I have always been fascinated with ancient Greek and classical Roman sculptures and how they now differ from their original form. Usually, they are seen broken, in fragments or with a lost limb, which I find incredibly beautiful and mysterious – their imperfection makes them interesting.”

— S. ErraZuriz

Parallel to the investigation between art and design, Errazuriz also dives headstrong into the question of breakage as a vital aesthetic resource, whether it's historical and accidental or artistically and purposeful: "Many of the sculptures we have learned to love and revere are broken, fragmented. Would they be as mysterious and fascinating to us if we could see them in their pristine original appearance? Is an artwork really only truly perfect once it also harbors the empathic patina of time or the scars of pain and misfortune? And if that is a vital artistic ingredient, can it be engineered into the work from inception?"

Following his recent ‘Venus d’Arles’ (2014) in which Errazuriz transformed the historic icon into a functioning bookshelf, this new series of limited-edition works - which includes a bookshelf, shelves supported by busts, table lamp, console and buffet - pay homage to ancient sculpture while blurring the boundary between art and design. For the Bookcase ‘Antiquity Shelves Nike’ (2017), a replica of the headless Nike (Winged Goddess) is enveloped in a wooden ‘scaffold’ that functions as shelving. Errazuriz experiments with innovative processes in design and art, including augmented and virtual reality.

ABOUT AUGMENTED REALITY

Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive experience of a real-world environment incorporating virtual elements using smartphones or tablets.

This experience is seamlessly interwoven with the physical world such that it is perceived as an immersive aspect of the real environment. Augmented reality is used to enhance natural environments or situations and offer perceptually enriched experiences.

Sebastian explains AR and it’s upcoming evolution here.

ABOUT ALL WORLD

The digital platform allows artists and designers to upload works, create AR exhibitions and send a link to their audience to visualize art within their own homes. Collectors can simply open a link and see life size creations in AR.

The artworks can be seen anywhere through smartphones, no app is needed, viewers internationally can see the artwork appear in their personal spaces. Art enthusiasts are now discovering entirely new artists from all around the world.

ALL’s digital tools are designed to support creators when it is not possible to physically go see art. These tools have the possibility to go beyond their current scope and have the potential to become a new parallel way of exhibiting and selling art in the future. Augmented Reality can reinvent the rules of the art world. A future democratic space where anyone can create anything they imagine, and exhibit anywhere they wish. A world where art is not only accessible by the elites, where millions of people can view and own AR works and where the ecological footprint and waste are reduced.

Buying physical works through an AR experience today is only the very beginning. The future is here. With the arrival of 5G, 3D scanning technology and augmented reality glasses; art as we know it will change forever. We are looking at the beginning of a new artworld.
